1873 Banyan Tree Sticker

from $6.50

This drawing came about a few days after the wildfires ripped though Lāhainā town. It was a response to my own grief as I mourned in solidarity with the Maui community. As a kid growing up in the ‘90s, Upcountry Maui was fairly remote; to go to Lāhainā town was a rare treat. Some of my earliest childhood memories are walking down Front Street with my parents, learning to surf at Brakewall, camping at Grandma’s and birthdays at Launiupoko. One year around Christmas time Costco had a bunch of walkie-talkies and tons of kids on island had got them. We would create special radio codenames and try to reach other kids on island. My sister and I were stoked once when my Dad drove us to town to try to reach some kids on the westside. How pumped we were when we could get one person. That was the best gift my parents gave me. My Dad used to say Aloha is in the pu’uwai, not the koko, meaning Aloha is in the heart not the blood. What I think he meant by this was that every person has the opportunity to embody Aloha. As an adult I realize, while I feel Maui raised me, Lāhainā is where I became an adult. It’s where I had some of my first drinks. It’s where I was inspired to launch my Etsy. It gave me support, encouragement, guidance and freedom. This is my opportunity to give back in anyway I can. 100 percent of my net profit from any sales will be donated directly to families impacted by the fires or to community funds/nonprofits. Donations will be made on a weekly or monthly basis depending on the level of support. Mahalo for your kokua.
